I-86 Corridor
A major portion of the Southern Tier Expressway in New York State became an interstate highway in December 1999. New York State Governor George Pataki requested that the Federal Highway Administration designate that portion of the highway, from Lake Erie on the west to the western boundary of Chemung County, as an interstate highway. This represents a 177 mile segment of the Southern Tier Expressway, leaving 204 miles to be upgraded to interstate standards. New York State DOT has identified remaining projects which must be completed in the un-designated portion of the highway to make Route 17 a complete interstate highway.
This website has been designed to enhance the traveler's experience along the Southern Tier and Hudson Valley and to promote and accelerate the upgrading of Route 17, allowing Interstate 86 designation. This website complements the I-86 TRAVEL GUIDE, published and printed twice a year by "The Evening Tribune" in Hornell, New York.
